Brexit Tattoos

Client: We Are Europe

Sector: Government

Role: Concept, Creative Direction

Using a more relatable, 'permanent' decision to influence younger voters during the Brexit vote.

A physical tattoo shop located on Berwick Street in the heart of Soho, London. ‘Brexit Tattoos’ opened the day before the ‘Brexit’ polls.

Working with London tattoo store ‘One- by-One’ we took over their retail space and tattoo artists to offer a selection of free tattoo designs, inspired by the negative - and permanent - effects of leaving Europe.

“It’s your choice, but it’s permanent.”

Free to Choose

We had a free selection of 13 pre-designed tattoos for punters to choose from.

A woman pushing a pram stopped and discussed the various designs. "I like this one the most," a staff member said, recommending a design of a naked Boris Johnson on a bed of roses, his genitals covered by a sign reading "Forever". Pointing to his lower back, he said: "I'd get it right here. The perfect tramp stamp."

"The significance of a tattoo and the reason we're doing this activity is to demonstrate the permanence of the decsision that is being made about Brexit. We're fully booked downstairs and the people coming in are predominantly doing it ironically. But, everyone has really gotten into the spirit of things. They really want to get involved and help us convey our message."

Nacho The Freaky

'Nacho' was our tattoo artist for the day. Lovely guy. Wore a balaclava at all times, refused to be interviewed and was really excited about pissing off the establishment.

"Tom"

Tom refused to give his surname because he was afraid of losing his job. Although he voted for Britain to stay in the EU, he said he was unimpressed with both campaigns.

"I've got a few tattoos already. I know what it takes to get a tattoo. I like it, I like having the art on my body." he said. "But I know what it takes. Whereas if you're voting Leave, it's the same but it would be like getting my first tattoo."
